I must say that I really feel privileged to come home to my mice every day. I can't remember one single day, where they haven't been awake and ready to say hello. Many people think that mice aren't that smart and affectionate, but they are so wrong. Mice quickly figure out who their owner is, and recognize them with no problem. They may not be as big as a dog, or as smart, but they certainly aren't stupid.
I remember the first time it actually occured to me, that my mice recognized me. I had a friend over and Pippin was running around on his table, loving life as usual. When ever I get up from my couch, Pippin will come running to the edge of the table, wanting attention. And when I walk around the table, he follows me. I've never thought much about it, because he does this every time he sees me. But when my friend entered the room, Pippin changed behaviour immediately. He ran to hide behind his cage, refusing to come out until my friend had left the room!
That's when I realized that he really did recognize me! Of course I didn't want him to be scared when I have guests over, so my good friend came over a lot of times, and Pippin isn't afraid of her anymore - or her boyfriend. But he still acts differently around me. And I know it sounds cheesy, but it really makes me happy. When I meet new people they don't understand why my mice mean so much to me. They see mice as stupid animals who aren't worth as much as a dog or a cat. But when they come home and meet my mice, they quickly change their minds. Mice a loving animals, just like hamsters or any other rodents. They make me smile every single day, and when I get home, I'm greeted with as much enthusiasm as if they were dogs.
Just because they are small, doesn't mean that they aren't worth as much as any other animal <3
